The number of train accidents in India has seen a dramatic drop of 80 per year over the past decade from the annual 1,390 in the 1960s. Yet officials say that only less than 50% of the passengers choose train travel insurance. If you’re worried about having to pay a premium for something you might never claim, we have good news for you. IRCTC offers insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakhs for a premium of a mere ₹0.35. Plus, the website is extremely user-friendly. All you need to do is opt for IRCTC insurance coverage when you book your e-ticket.

Travel insurance protects against unexpected financial crises while travelling. It includes both major and minor inconveniences, from small injuries to fatalities. From lost luggage to medical care, every emergency is taken care of. Choosing travel insurance coverage is an inexpensive and smart choice that will eliminate travel worries and regrets.

Maximum Coverage by IRCTC Insurance

The insurance is valid from the time of train departure from the originating station to the train’s arrival at the destination station, including the processes of entraining and detraining. The coverage is valid for any new route if your train is diverted due to any reason. Trains can also be terminated for several reasons. Therefore, the travel insurance also covers the part of the journey taken by an alternate mode of transportation to the destination station due to train termination. The IRCTC travel insurance policy is uniform for all the classes of travellers.

The coverage includes:

  • Death (accidental injury leading to death within 12 months) – ₹10,00,000

  • Permanent total disability (loss of sight, limbs, lower jaw and sanity) – ₹10,00,000

  • Permanent partial disability (loss of fingers, elbow, hip and toes) – ₹7,50,000

  • Hospital expenses (nursing, diagnostics, ICU, blood, O2 and room rent) – ₹2,00,000

  • Transportation of mortal remains (to the residence or the cremation ground) – ₹10,000

Anyone who has booked their train tickets online, opted for the IRCTC insurance coverage and paid the premium is entitled to the above-mentioned financial cover. It is important to know that children below 5 years of age are not included in this policy.

Exclusions Under the IRCTC Travel Insurance Policy

Every passenger under a specific PNR that is linked to the IRCTC insurance will receive financial protection. However, the insurance companies are not liable to make payments for certain situations. These include:

  • Accident due to breaking laws with a criminal attitude

  • Situations arising on the train due to mental disorders, fits or convulsions

  • Intentional self-injury and suicide attempts

  • Discomfort due to illegal drug or alcohol consumption

  • Nuclear energy, war and radiation attacks

  • Pregnancy, childbirth or the consequences of the same

  • Health check-ups for purposes other than the accident

Instances where the ticket was booked and not confirmed yet the passenger boarded the train or if the ticket was booked but the train was not boarded will not be covered under the policy.

Travelling by train is thrilling but it is always wise to remain protected against the unexpected. Travel insurance coverage by IRCTC is the smart choice. Just make sure to check the eligibility, documentation, maximum coverage and claim process for a hassle-free experience.
